History of the School

Mount Carmel School was established in 2001, June 12 under the leadership of Rev Fr Sunny Thuruthippillil O.Carm. It is run by Carmelite fathers, St Thomas Province, India (O. Carm.). The school is located in 1 km away from Kosigi Village. It was started with an objective to uplift the social, cultural and educational needs of the people.

Location – at a glance

Kosigi is a village in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh state in India. It is an interior area and the nearest city and the district headquarters is Kurnool which is 125 kms away. Kurnool district along with three districts (Cudappah, Chittoor and Ananthapur) is called RAYALSEEMA, an area of cheap quality stones and dry weather.

The Real Situations

Kosigi and the surrounding Mandals are backward in economic, health, educational and social terms. It is one of the poorest Mandals in Kurnool district in India. Due to continuous droughts, illiteracy and high poverty, the development in this area is very less than the mainstream development of an average town in India. The heat usually touches 40ºC to 45ºC.

Educational Condition

The literacy rate in this place is below 28 to 32% compared to other districts. It is a common practice that, among the village children 45% of them are drop out from their education after 5th class. The illiterate parents even think that sending their children to school is a great loss because the children work in the field for daily wages. The situation of the girls is still worse. More than 60% girls in this area, children’s marriage take place at the age of 12 to 14. The educational level of women and girls are the lowest.

The Lighting Education through Schooling

So we are usually visiting houses and conducting awareness programs in this area and the nearby villages. Through the continuous program and house visit, they slowly came forward with the idea of educating children.

We are having English medium up to 10th class. The students are good enough to continue their studies, but the lack of motivation from the part of parents prevents them not coming to school regularly. Since most of the children are from illiterate and poor families they cannot afford to buy the books and uniform and so forth things. So by giving concessions and support for education we are trying to uplift the poor and marginalized children.

We consider education as integral formation of the human person for the fulfillment of his/her individual and social responsibilities. Our educational endeavors aim at forming leaders who are intellectually competent, spiritually mature, morally upright, psychologically integrated, physically healthy, and socially acceptable; who will champion the cause of justice, love truth and peace and who are ever open to further growth.

We aspire towards creating a just and human society where dignity of human person is respected, where unjust social structures are challenged, where our cultural heritage of ahimsa, religious harmony and national integration is upheld, and where the poor and marginalized are specially taken care of. To this end, a number of innovation features are being incorporated into the formal framework of the curriculum of the school.
